EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
