The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
