Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
