The Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux could seem more like a difficult university challenge rather than the latest pop project from a musician who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop star. Divided into four separate sections and sung in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently via the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the work of other artists appear quite small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking is nothing short of a miracle, with sole credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to blend historical sounds and the present, the ambitions are much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant energy shines clearly during a stirring piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with comedic impact. The track then segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what it is going next."

Nearly every track finishes in a completely different place from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album is navigating the line of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track sung primarily in the English language builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spirals upward. That trick is echoed on another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a sharp edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
